10 Simple Ways to Live a More Sustainable Lifestyle
Updated: Apr 17, 2019
Happy Spring dear friends! We made it through winter and are now ready to enjoy our lovely Spring ahead... warmer days, yard work, planting flower beds, gardening and spring cleaning!
What better way to celebrate Spring and Earth Day (April 22) then by making a resolution to live a more eco-friendly existence?
Our earth is in need of our help and we can all do our part to pitch in — It only takes a few simple changes that everyone can do to help create an Earth that is healthier and happier!
#1 - Start Recycling
Seems simple but if you've been kind of lax about separating your waste, now would be a great time to start. Recycling is one of the most effective ways you can prevent additional damage to our planet. Not only does it help curb the pollution inflicted by landfill sites, but it also cuts back on the need for raw materials so that our natural resources can be preserved. Plus, it's really easy, fun (if you enjoy organization like me ;) and you feel pretty darn good when taking action.
#2 - Purchase a Reusable Water Bottle and Reusable Straw
Plastic wastes fossil fuels in both production and transport, and continues to end up in our landfills and waterways. Opting for a reusable water bottle doesn't just cut down on waste—it also encourages you to stay hydrated. Many restaurants have started to ban the plastic straw and we can take action as well. Simply refuse to use straws at restaurants and in your home, and this one simple plastic will be entirely eliminated. If you do love to drink out of a straw - you can buy stainless steel straws, they are inexpensive, travel easy and will last you a lifetime.
#3 - Start Composting
It's so easy - And you'll put your food waste to good use and help your garden thrive. You will be amazed at how little waste you actually have once you recycle plus compost!
#4 - Shop Local Farmers
When you buy local, you are purchasing food that did not have to be shipped from another part of the world. Shipping our foods uses our natural resources. When you purchase from your local farmer, food share or farmer's market - food tastes better, you can get better prices, you are helping your local community and our earth! That's an easy WIN!
#5 - Start a Garden
Even better - grow your own garden! If your outdoor space is minimal, consider investing in a small raised garden bed and plant a few vegetables. If you have no outdoor space... fresh herbs are pretty easy to grow indoors as well.
#6 - Reusable Grocery Bag or Tote
Invest in a heavy duty Grocery Bag or Tote that you can take with you again and again to the market. This way - you won’t need to use paper or plastic bags over and over again.
#7 - Mason Jars
I love Mason Jars because they are great for just about anything! Take your cold brew to go, your lunch salad, store your makeup products, or house your beans and grains from the bulk bins. They last forever and you've skipped all the plastic.
#8 - Air Dry Your Laundry
Another win WIN! Air Drying your laundry is better for the longevity of your clothes and you are saving our planet's resources.
#9 - Take Shorter Showers
I love long, hot showers just like the next person but I don’t love them as much as I love our planet. Taking shorter showers is an easy way we can all live a more sustainable lifestyle. Make sure to also turn the sink water off when you are brushing your teeth.
#10 - Ride your Bike
Ride a bike! Bikes make you feel like a kid again! They are great exercise and such a good way to get around at home and when you are traveling. Most major cities now have bike rentals racks everywhere so you can easily explore a new city by bike while reducing your carbon footprint.
